Abstract:

Arabic language and rhetoric is the most important science being necessary for Tafsir of the Qur’an. Distance from the date of revelation, it is gaining more importance to know the using of Arabic that was used during the time of revelation in order to do not remove meaning of the Qur’anic words from their places at Tafsir. Therefore early scholars and their works have a particular importance as the source of the Qur’anic studies. In this study, it was studied and evaluated that Abu Ubaydah Ma‘mar Ibn al-Muthanna and his scientific personality who left philological works which are essential to the basic Islamic sciences among the early Islamic scholars. Likewise it was studied his philological tafsir by the name of “Majaz al-Qur‘an”. Especially, issues in the introduction of Mecâzü’l-Kur’ân which guide formally to tafsir studies and are important for the Arabic language and rhetoric, were discussed. “Majaz al-Qur‘an” which was published by Fuad Sezgin by working on five manuscripts, constitutes the main source of this study.
