The city of Tarsus was conquered during the period of caliphate of Umar and later started to come up to the beginning of the regions in which they operate. After the capture of Tarsus, ıt was fortified again together with the other cities which were on the fronties of Byzantine. During the time in which the Muslims in Tarsus retained, to perform the duty of jihad, the mujahideen veterans from all the İslamic lands came to Tarsus for their beliefs as a volunteer warriors and they formed a strong fortification here. In this way, the volunteer associations placed in garrison in Tarsus began to organise raids into Anatolia each year summer and winter. In response to this, the first goal for the Byzantine attacks were the border cities such as Tarsus. In this regard, from time to time Tarsus was subjected to attacks by the Byzantines.In response to this, mostly the Byzantine attacks were responded and Tarsus was remained for along time in the hands of Muslims. However, the IslamicByzantine border took place in Tarsus and often suffered huge losses due to the war zone, but neverthless Tarsus continued to be an important trade center in this period
