Abstract:

In Turkey, in 2019, a total of 1 million 409 thousand hectares of potato was produced by 4 million 980 thousand tons. In terms of the October area of potato, Niğde is in the first place with a share of 13.05%, Konya is in the second place with a share of 10.19%, Afyonkarahisar is in the third place with a share of 10.09%. The potato exports in 2019 occurred at approximately 145 thousand tons and 26.5 million dollars. Potato exports are mostly made to Iraq, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan. The data on the variables in the study cover the periods 1990-2019. The current situation of potato production in the world and in Turkey, the external trade structure, the policy of supporting potatoes in Turkey and the ways and recommendations to be followed to increase the potato production in Turkey in the future periods. In Turkey, a model was created to determine the factors affecting the production of potatoes and the potatoes producers decided to produce potatoes while the price of potatoes passed into their hands in the previous year, the price of fertilizer last year and the amount of potatoes consumed, i.e. the demand, determined that they planted potatoes. When the price of potatoes and the potato consumption increased in the previous year, the farmer was producing more potatoes, the increase in fertilizer prices resulted in the farmer’s removal from the potato production.
