Objective: This study has been done to compare the perceived social support levels of elder people living at nursing home with at home. Method: The study has been applied to elder people staying at nursing home (55 elders) and ones living with their family (53 elders), 108 in total. The socio-demographic characteristics questionnaire and “Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS)” were used for the collection of data. For the evaluation of data frequency distributions, chi-square and student-t test were used. Results: The perceived social support mean score by individuals living in nursing home (X=32.58±01.19) was lower than ones living at home (X=42.01±16.40) (p<0.05). When average MSPSS scores were analyzed, all subscales of average score of ones living in nursing home was found to be significantly lower than that of people living at home. Of individuals living in nursing homes, family support mean score was found as 9.8±7.5, support from friends mean score was found as 12.6±8.4 and relatives support average score was found as 10.1±6.8. Conclusion: As a result of this study it was determined that the social support perception of elder people living in nursing homes is lower in comparison to ones living at home. The study shows that the staff working at nursing homes should be given training on socialization of elder people and the necessary arrangements should be made to increase the social support for elder people.
