Abstract:

Empathy is a process that is needed in the nursing profession in understanding the patient/client, helping and solving problems. The aim of the study is to determine the effect of the empathy levels of the students participating in the women's health nursing course hospital practice on their approach and care to some women's health problems. The descriptive study was conducted with 110 volunteer students who took the Obstetrics-Gynecology and Diseases Nursing course in the 2019-2020 academic year. Data were collected using the introductory information form and the Basic Empathy Scale (BES). The BES score average of the students participating in the study was 73.92±1.13, 67.1% female and 32.9% male. It was determined that there was a statistical relationship between the gender of the students, the area where they mostly practiced and the area they had difficulty in giving care and their empathy levels (P < 0.05). It was found that there was no relationship between the nursing diagnoses determined by the students and thoughts about the delivery type and the empathy levels (P > 0.05). It was determined that the empathy levels of the students were not effective in their opinions about the nursing diagnoses and women's birth type, and that empathy was an important factor while giving care in the field of women's health.
