As the pig is a taboo animal for the Moslems, one may expect that their image of it is different from that of the Christians, for whom this animal has an image with multiple, both positive and negative facets, but is not taboo. So the “pig” may give us a good example of how language reflects cultural differences. In this study, a comparison is made between the Ottoman-Turkish and the French use of the term. The Ottoman attitude, and more generally the Turkish attitude, is illustrated by examples, the French attitude taken as known. The Ottoman-Turkish material for comparison is the use of the pig/boar (domuz/hınzîr) in the Seyahatnâme of Evliyâ Çelebi. The study shows that a cultural difference reflected in language is not necessarily that which one might expect a priori. At the same time, these examples give an idea of Evliyâ Çelebi’s use of figurative language.
