Abstract:

Bangladesh earned lower middle-income country status in 2015 owing to its rapid economic growth. In 2018, the country entered the United Nations’ list of Least Developed Countries and is on track for graduation to middle-income country in 2024. The key criteria on which she will be awarded this title is her sustainable economic growth. The economic advancement of a country largely depends on its energy sector, and more explicitly electricity. In Bangladesh, more than 90% of the electricity is produced from different sources of fossil fuel such as diesel oil, furnace oil, natural gas, and coal. Burning these fossil fuels expediting not only the depletion of the reserve of these nonrenewable sources and threatening continuation of electricity supply, but also the deterioration of environmental quality. Thus, to ensure an unremitting supply of electricity, the country needs to have sustainable and environmentally friendly sources. As the domestically produced resources are currently insufficient to satisfy the power demand, it is urgent to adapt sustainable and commercially feasible technologies to confront the challenges of future energy scarcity. Hence, the article discusses potentiality of renewable energy sources, their current contribution and challenges, and future governmental policies for their development in the perspective of Bangladesh.<
