Abstract:

In order for human beings, who are undergoing a rapid process of change, to adapt to this change, they need to have certain skills. These skills are taught to individuals through the education system and curricula. In the 2018 updated social studies curriculum, there are 27 skills. One of the basic skills included in the social studies curriculum and textbooks is self-control. The aim of the research is to examine the self-control skill in social studies curricula and textbooks. The study investigates where self-control is included in the learning areas and learning outcomes of the social studies curriculum and how it is presented in textbooks. A qualitative approach has been used in the research. Data have been collected through document analysis technique. The data sources used are the social studies curriculum published by the Ministry of National Education and textbooks published by a private publishing house for 4th and 5th grades. The research data have been analyzed through descriptive analysis. Self-control skill is included in four learning outcomes of the production, distribution, and consumption learning area in the 4th-grade curriculum and three learning outcomes of the science, technology, and society learning area in the 5th-grade curriculum. The aim of the 4th-grade social studies textbook is to encourage students to consciously distinguish between their desires and needs. The 5th-grade social studies textbook focuses on the impact of technology on social relations and the controlled use of technology.
