Abstract:

Purpose: In our study, we aimed at evaluating the oral and dental health of individuals interested in sports, and to study the effects of oral hygiene and nutritional habits on oral and dental health. Tools and Methods: ... from the Sports High School, 241, ... from the School of Fine Arts, 179 students were applied to the survey form with questions related to socioeconomic/demographic conditions, nutrition and oral hygiene habits and sports age. By performing oral examinations of all participants; the DMFT/DMFS, UGT, plaque and gingival index scores were determined, the closing relationships of the teeth were assessed. The data received was statistically analyzed. Results: In both high schools, the majority of students found their families had a low monthly income level. Sports high school students were found to be more inclined to caryogenic nutrition and their toothbrush habits were weaker. Sports High School students found high DMFT/DMFS, plaque and gingival index scores (p<0,05). There was no statistical difference between high schools in terms of UGT index scores (p>0,05). Except for the Angle Class 3 closing ratio (p<0,05) which was more frequently seen in the Sports High School, there was no difference between the high schools in terms of the closing ratio and bad oral habits (p>0,05). Results: It is important to inform individuals, their families, their teachers or their coaches about their eating and oral hygiene habits and effects.
