This study aims to address the position of ancient female poet Sappho in the context of gender in the Greek world. In ancient Greece, women were kept outside the public spaces. Under these conditions that limit the place of a woman in society, it will not be wrong to think that it is quite difficult for educated and active women to appear in the life of society. Therefore, a well-educated intellectual woman, such as Sappho, can be traced in the Archaeological Period, is of great importance in terms of the history of education and the study of women. So is Sappho really an exception for the period and geography in which he lived? Or does Lesbos, where they were born and grew up, have a different perspective, like the other urban states in Anadolu, from the strong attitude developed against women in the Greek suburbs? In the axis of these questions, Sappho’s life as a woman brings light on the cultural history of the pre-Athenian world before the Athenian hegemony.

For this reason, it has a great importance in terms of education history and women’s studies, as a well-educated, intellectual woman like Sappho can be traced during the Archaic Period. Is Sappho really an exception for the period and geography she lived in? Otherwise, does Lesbos, where she was born and raised, has a different perspective from the strict attitude towards women developed in the Greek mainland, similar to the other city states in Anatolia? In the context of these questions, Sappho's life as a woman, enlightens the cultural past in the Aegean world before the hegemony of Athens.
