Abstract:

The study discussed the relationship between architecture and cinema in the context of spatial sensations. The aim of the study is to adapt the concept of architecture and space with interdisciplinary approach, creating new openings for the architectural theory. The film spaces studied in this study were adopted as a method of dealing with not just a technical and mathematical approach, but a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach. In this context, the sensations created by the spaces in the film on the audience are the focus of the work. In the study, Stanley Kubrick's film 'The Shining' is discussed in the context of spatial sensation. The main places of the film are identified and the sensations are matched with these places. These matchings have appeared as lobby - stuck, corridors - anxiety, the Torrence family's room - uncertainty, the elevator - humility, the labyrinth - disappearance, the stairs - panic, the ballroom - misconduct, the bathroom - aggression. The result section emphasizes that spatial sensation is an important element in architecture for both theory and application, that space and architecture cannot be thought independently of man, through the cinema that exists with the concepts of time and space. In this study, it is believed that the cinema will contribute to the development of the architectural theory and that scientific studies in this field will bring new perspectives to the field.
