Abstract:

Abstract The text introduces kindergarten representations in the 19th century by means of the circulation of news in the Rio de Janeiro newspaper press, specifically in the newspapers: Gazeta de Notícias, O Cruzeiro and Jornal do Commercio. These papers were chosen guided by Bastos (2011), who disseminates one of the first pedagogical guides aimed at education in kindergarten, the Manual para os jardins da infância, published by Dr. Menezes Vieira in 1882. The research was developed in the National Brazilian Library, Digital Newspaper Library collection, using content analysis (Vala, 1986; Bardin, 1977). The articles appointed to controversies regarding the creation of the first educational institutions of this type in Brazil; the role of kindergartens supported by Froebelian principles; and a threefold emphasis on physical, intellectual and moral aspects.
