Abstract:

The excavations, which have been conducted intermittently in Nysa on the Maeander since the beginning of the 20th century, have been systematically conducted by Ankara University expedition since 1990. The coins from the excavations and the surface finds found in and around the city contribute to the history of Nysa, as well as gives an idea about the use and circulation of coins regionally or by period. Out of the total 693 coins were found between 1992 and 2023, 111 are Roman provincial coins struck by cities under the Roman Empire. Among the identifiable coins, the majority consists of Nysa's own coins. It is noteworthy that the majority of the foreign coins are from the cities located in the Maeander Valley and its surroundings. These are the numismatic evidence of the use of important regional routes. In addition, coins from both coastal and inland cities in Western Anatolia have also been found. A coin from Callatis on the Romanian coast represents the farthest among the foreign coins.
