Abstract:

Cities, as spaces that provide social integrity, have been important in terms of human history from past to present. Cultural identity and artistic activities, which can be evaluated together with environmental effects and urban identity, are also important facts in terms of human history. Cities are places that contribute to individuals visually and intellectually. The subject of the city can be seen in artworks, with many images referring to things in the urban context, with different materials, and with different concerns. While the scope of art has developed in the contemporary art world, alternatives offered by cities to individuals in making art, and cultural identity have also changed. Well, due to what conditions did the changes of the cities and the artists fed by them take place from the past to the current period? In the article, since there is a need for information that can answer this question, subheadings have been created regarding the urban phenomenon, which refer to identity, society, cultural values and art. The aim of the article is to examine the interaction and development of city, culture, and art. Scope of work; written and visual sources related to the subject were examined. Due to the wide scope of the subject, the studies about the city are limited on the basis of the processes of modernism and postmodernism. The examples of artworks in the last subtitle of the article are limited to three examples from different periods of the history of Turkish paintings, with a historical order.
