Abstract:

In our study, we aimed to investigate the effect of internet addiction and smartphone use on headaches in Faculty of Medicine students. The universe of our study consists of 468 students who were studying at Gaziosmanpaşa University Faculty of Medicine between May 2019 and July 2019 and who voluntarily accepted to participate in the study. The students were asked to answer questionnaires with a total of 48 questions including the information form containing sociodemographic data, the headache questionnaire and the Young Internet Addiction Scale. The analysis of the data was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 19 program (SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL). In this tudy, we have 468 participant and 65.4% (306) of them are female, 34.6% (162) are male students. The average Young internet addiction scale score of the participants was found to be 33.24. It was determined that 1.3% of the participants were internet addicts and 13.9% were using risky for internet addiction. In general, it can be said that 15.2% of the participants have "problematic internet usage". However, a statistically significant correlation was found between the class, age, smoking, school success, voluntary coming to the department, having a previous diagnosis of psychiatric illness, having a drug used continuously, and sleeping time. In addition, 383 people (81.8%) stated that they had headaches and 65 (17.1%) of these people stated that they had severe headaches and 15 (3.9%) had a very severe headache. A statistically significant relationship was found with the severity of headache and the age of onset of headache. Internet addiction is an important issue that needs to research more. Solution of mental and physical problems is only possible with early detection and taking precautions. Keywords: Headache, Internet addiction, Smart phone
