Tasarım kavramı ve tasarlama eylemi üniversite yıllarına kadar birçok öğrencinin uzak kaldığı kavramlardır. Oysa yaratıcılık çocuk yaşlardan itibaren kendini gösteren yeteneklerden biridir. Bu sebeple özellikle çocukların eğitimi sırasında bu yeteneklerini geliştirebilme ve kendilerini tanıma şansı elde edebilmeleri oldukça önemlidir. İlkokul döneminde çocukların tasarım kabiliyetlerini fark edebilme ve geliştirebilme olanağının sağlanması kişisel gelişimleri açısından oldukça önemlidir. Çalışma kapsamında 8-12 yaş arası çocuklarla kentsel mekân tasarımı üzerine teorik ve uygulamalı olarak iki aşamadan oluşan bir program gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu kapsamda çalışmanın teorik aşamasında Antik Çağ’dan, Modern Çağ’a kadar geniş bir tarih aralığında kent örnekleri üzerinden kentsel mekân ve tasarıma dair bilgiler aktarılmıştır. Uygulama aşamasında çocuklardan hayallerindeki kentsel mekânları, avlu, sokak ve meydan gibi kavramlar üzerinden 2 boyutlu ve/veya 3 boyutlu olarak ifade etmeleri beklenmiştir. Çalışma sonunda çocukların kentsel mekân algısına dair analizler yapılması ve bu eğitimin çocukların tasarım kabiliyetlerine etkisinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Kentsel mekân ve tasarımı üzerinden yürütülen bu çalışma, çocukların mekân duygusunun güçlenmesini, kente dair farkındalık kazanmasını, ölçek kavramının gelişmesini ve tasarım yönlerinin kuvvetlenmesini sağlanmıştır. Bunun yanı sıra çocuklarda kendini ifade etme becerisinin ve özgüven gelişiminin de olumlu yönde etkilendiği gözlemlenmiştir.
Numerous students become distanced from the concept of design and excogitation until their university years. However, creativity is one of the talents that show indications from childhood. Therefore, improving skills and knowing themselves is very important for children, especially during their education. Providing primary school children with an opportunity to discover and increase their design skills is crucial for their pediatric development. Within the scope of the study, a two-stage program, theoretical and practical, was carried out in designing urban spaces with children aged 8-12. In this context, participants were informed of urban space and urban design through samples from the Ancient Age to the Modern Age in the theoretical stage of the study. At the practical stage, the tutor requested to visualize urban spaces such as courtyards, streets, and squares of their dreams in 2D and 3D from children. At the end of the study, it is aim to analyze children’s perception of urban space and examine the effect of this program on children’s design skills. This study, carried out on urban space and its design, has ensured that children's sense of space is strengthened, they gain awareness of the city, the concept of scale is developed and their design skills are increased. On the other hand, positive affection for children’s ability to self-expression and self-confidence development are also determined.
