Objective: The current study aims to indicate and compare type D personality traits, temperament and character traits, depression and anxiety levels, suicidality and social support in alcohol dependents and controls and to find out the association of these parameters with each other. Methods: Sixty-nine alcohol-dependent patients and 58 age-matched healthy controls were assessed with Sociodemographic Data Form, Type-D Personality Scale 14, Temperament and Character Inventory, The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, SAD PERSONS Scale and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Results: Alcohol dependents scored significantly higher than controls in terms of type D personality traits (p<0.001), novelty seeking (p<0.001) and harm avoidance (p=0.024) subscales of Temperament and Character Inventory, anxiety (p<0.001), depression (p<0.001) and suicidality (p<0.001). They scored significantly lower than controls in terms of persistence (p=0.020) and self-directedness (p=0.038). There was no significant difference between groups considering perceived social support (p=0.491). Correlation analysis revealed that increased harm avoidance (r=0.447, p<0.01), depression (r=0.426, p<0.01), anxiety (r=0.629, p<0.01), suicidality (r=0.277, p<0.05), decreased self-directedness (r=-0.529, p<0.01), and cooperativeness (r=-0.561, p<0.01) scores were associated with type D personality traits. Conclusions: This study indicates that alcohol dependents exhibit type D personality traits more than the healthy controls and type D personality traits are associated with some aspects of Cloningers personality model, depression and anxiety levels and suicidality. These findings may have important implications for the consideration of personality factors within the treatment of alcohol dependent patients.
