Abstract:

This study was conducted with the aim of studying the relationship between the level of self-respect and empathy development of children aged 10.11,12 and the attitudes of parents. At the developmental stage, the child develops self-respect and empathy with the attitudes and behaviors he sees within the family. This study, aimed at researching the relationship between these two concepts in the development process, draws attention to these concepts in the development of the child. Research is a quantitative study that covers relative data analysis. According to the results obtained in the study, the influence of parents’ attitudes in terms of demographic variables on children’s level of empathic development and self-esteem has been studied. The examples of the study were created with 100 children, including 42 girls and 58 boys, who studied in the secondary school in Istanbul or Esenyurt district. The study used the ‘empathy scale for children’ for the level of development of empathy. For self-esteem, Coopersmith’s self-esteem scale, the mother-father attitude scale, was used. Information about the parents is taken from the child. The parents’ attitudes have been studied in two separate categories as ‘democratic’ and ‘autoritary’. According to the research findings, there is a statistically positive relationship between the level of self-respect and empathy development in the child and the democratic parent’s attitude. A negative relationship between the authoritative parent attitude and the level of self-respect and empathy development in the child has been identified. It has been found that there is a meaningful relationship between self-respect and empathy level of development. The conclusion has been that the child’s self-respect and level of empathic development are associated with the parent’s attitude and that the child’s empathic development level is high in children with high self-respect.
