Abstract:

The technological development, which brings many facilities together, offers new products and services to humanity. Technology has a significant impact on production and employment. In particular, the concerns that the need for labour will be reduced, while there are different views on the direction of the effect it will create on employment, make it necessary to investigate this relationship. Therefore, determining how technological change will affect the country’s employment level is of importance for employment policies. Because technology affects the employment structure as both an input and an output of the production process. According to this study, the technology-employment relationship for the 1989-2017 period in Turkey is examined and the impact of technological change on total employment, educated employment and women’s employment is analyzed. The main objective of the study is to investigate the clear impact of technological developments in our country on total employment. However, in order to analyze the impact of technological developments on the employment structure, it is attempted to determine the impact on women’s employment and educated employment. In the study in Turkey, time series analysis is carried out using annual data covering the years 1989-2017. The relationship between the variables is studied using three different models with the ARDL approach. In the first model where the net impact of technological change on total employment is studied, the conclusion is that technology has a negative impact on total employment. The second model is investigating the impact of technological change on educated employment. The findings conclude that the relationship between technological development and educated employment in the long term is meaningless. Lastly, the third model examines the impact of technology on women’s employment. According to estimates, technological developments have a negative impact on women’s employment.
