Bu çalışma, tarihi süreç içerisinde Dicle Bölümü’nün beşeri ve ekonomik özelliklerini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. İnsanın mekân üzerindeki değişimin en önemli kanıtlarından birini oluşturan şehirler, geçmişte var olan toplumların kültürel özelliklerini anlamak ve yerleşmelerdeki sosyo-ekonomik değişkenleri belirlemek açısından önemlidir. Eğer şehirlerin tarihi birikimleri ve coğrafyaları doğru analiz edilirse, bugünkü sorunlarına daha iyi çözümler üretebilir ve geleceğe dair planlamalar daha iyi yapılabilir. Araştırmanın konusunu oluşturan Dicle Bölümü, bugün Güneydoğu Anadolu Bölgesi’nde yer almaktadır. Anadolu’da doğuyu batıya, kuzeyi güneye bağlayan yolların kavşağında bulunan ve yerleşme tarihi boyunca farklı devletlerin hâkimiyetinde kalan bölüm, sosyo-ekonomik ve kültürel özellikleriyle önemli bir yerleşim merkezi olmuş ve kendine özgü bir form kazanmıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı İslam coğrafyacılarının eserlerinin incelenmesiyle Dicle Bölümü’nün Orta Çağ’daki beşeri ve ekonomik özelliklerini ortaya koymaktır. Bu amacı gerçekleştirmek amacıyla 9 ile 14. yüzyıllar arasına ait İslam coğrafyacılarının eserler incelenmiştir. Bu çalışmada tarihsel süreçte Dicle Bölümü’nün beşeri ve ekonomik özellikleri değerlendirilmiş, bu gelişimi sağlayan faktörler vurgulanmıştır. Çalışma ile Orta Çağ’da Dicle Bölümü’nde günümüze kadar ulaşan farklı etnik grupların olduğu, bölümün şehirlerinin ekonomik açıdan zengin ve üretken aynı zamanda birer kültür ve eğitim merkezi olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Araştırma ile Dicle Bölümü’ne ait ürünlerin dünyaca tanındığı belirlenmiştir. Burada üretilen ürünlerin başında dokuma, çeşitli meyve ve sebze, tiftik keçisi, kireç ve cam ürünleri gelmektedir.
This study aims to reveal the human and economic characteristics of the Dicle Department in the historic process. The cities, which are one of the most important evidence of human space change, are important to understand the cultural characteristics of communities that existed in the past and to identify the socio-economic variables in settlements. If the historical accumulations and geographics of cities are correctly analyzed, better solutions to the problems of today can be produced and better planning for the future can be made.
The Dicle department, which is the subject of the research, is now located in the southeastern Anadolu region. The area in Anadolu, located on the crossroads of the roads that connect the east to the west, the north to the south and remaining under the domination of different states throughout the settlement history, has become an important settlement center with its socio-economic and cultural characteristics and has gained its own unique form.

The aim of this study is to reveal the human and economic characteristics of the Dicle (Tigris) Section in the Middle Ages by examining the works of Islamic geographers. In order to realize this aim, were examined the works of Islamic geographers from 9th to 14th centuries. In this study, were emphasized the human and economic characteristics of the Dicle (Tigris) Section were evaluated in the historical process and the factors that contributed to this development. As a result of the study, it was concluded that there were different ethnic groups in the Dicle (Tigris) Section in the Middle Ages and that the cities were economically rich and productive at the same time as cultural and educational centers. The main products are produced here weaving, various fruits and vegetables, mohair goats, lime and glass products etc.
