Tarihi bir olay ele alınırken söz konusu toplumun veya toplumların birçok yönü ele alınarak incelenmek zorundadır. Böyle bir yöntem incelenmediği zaman tarihi araştırma eksik veya yetersiz kalabilir. Roma Devleti’nin siyasi hayatını anlayabilmek için dinin devlet içerisindeki yeri göz önünde bulundurmak gereklidir. Dini hayatın en büyük parçası olan tanrı ve tanrı geleneği bu oluşumda büyük bir etkiye sahiptir. M.Ö.8. yüzyıldan bize ulaşan rivayetlerden edinebildiğimiz bilgilere göre Roma Tanrı Geleneği incelendiği zaman birçok safhadan geçtiği görülmektedir. Tanrıların her birinin kendine ait özel bir kültü olduğu gibi kendi din adamları sınıfını da oluşturduğu görülmektedir. Dinin toplumdaki yükselişiyle beraber din adamlarının değeri de artmış ve kraldan sonra en yüksek mevkide din adamları bulunmuştur. Tanrı geleneğiyle beraber tanrının evi kabul edilen ibadethaneler yapılmıştır. Tanrıların kişiselleştirilmesi, tanrılara yeni isimler verilmesi Roma’ya giren yabancı tanrıların getirilmesiyle başlamıştır.
