Abstract:

When the horror film samples produced in Hollywood are taken into consideration, some elements, that were printed in the people’s mind, become prominent. It is possible to classify these elements as the similarities of the scenarios and fiction of the films, as well as indoor features. It is noteworthy that many of the horror film samples whose scenarios were fictionalized to take place in a construction or a space, have similarities in terms of their general indoor ambiance and the items used. Horror films seem to have never been fictionalized in a space that is sufficiently illuminated, having modern indoor design, clean-looking and whose fixtures and furnishings are orderly placed. On the other hand, dimly lit spaces, obsolete paintings on walls and ceilings, worn wallpapers and cracks, worn furniture, and squeaking flooring and stairs are some of the horror movie stereotypes that may come to mind first. In this study, the films were assessed in terms of their indoor design by examining the usage of indoor elements preferred by film scenarists in order to create a horror ambiance. This examination and assessment was made based on horror films that created a tremendous impression and were watched by the largest audience group.
