Abstract:

Abstract:

While health care is vital to each unit, emergency services are more important. Any medical treatment that requires acute injury, disease attacks or first aid and emergency intervention is provided in these units. Therefore, emergency services are the first places where cases with high mortality are addressed. On the other hand, the incidents of violence in emergency services are seen at a higher level than in other areas of healthcare. This study aims to investigate how the violence incidents in emergency services are assessed by health professionals. In 2015, 17 doctors, 39 nurses and 13 emergency medical technicians in the state hospital of Afyon formed the research sample. According to the survey, 97.1 percent of emergency workers were subjected to oral violence and 34.3 percent were subjected to physical violence, including oral violence. Violent persons are often close to the patient and use more violence outside of their work and working hours and in the examination room.

Violence İn Emergency Departments: Healthcare Personnel Perspective
2020

Abstract:

Although each ward within the health services is of vital importance, it might be claimed that emergency departments (EDs) – who treat the seriously ill or injured – are the most vital among them all. It is, after all, the ward where patients with the highest risk of mortality first apply. Perhaps because of the inevitable tension surrounding the treatment of patients under such circumstances, violent incidents in emergency services tend to occur more frequently than in other areas of health services. The goal of this paper, drawn from my master’s thesis, is to explore how health care professionals evaluate violence in emergency departments in Turkey. 17 physicians, 39 nurses, and 13 emergency medical technicians working in the Afyon State Hospital ED formed the research sample. Our findings suggest that 97.1% of the emergency services personnel were exposed to verbal violence and 34.3% were exposed to physical violence including verbal violence. It appears that the people exhibiting acts of violence are mostly the relatives of the patients, and they exhibit violence during work hours and in the examination room.
