Abstract:

The masjid of Akdogan at Sivrihisar Township with its architectural structure and the technical tradition coming from the ancient times draws attention with its circular axis superimposed wooden ceiling, constructed in 15th Century but not known widely. This humble building was repaired on various occasions throughout its existence and its circular axis superimposed wooden ceiling has several examples through the end of 19th century and the end of 20th century in the mosques and masjids of Eskişehir province’s townships and villages. The local people with their own resources built them all. They are dated back to the first century BC in Anatolia’s Phrygian housings in Eskişehir and around, as Vitruvius introduced. However, there is not any substantial example of such buildings before the times of the Ottoman. The mosques and masjids around Eskişehir are of two kinds according to the buildings’ base areas and beam coverings. In fact, we did not see any example of such superimposed ceilings built according to their multi angled or circular base areas. Among these examples, only three of them including Akdogan Masjid have upper joists and others have lower coatings. This study introduces Akdogan Masjid and its upper covered beams with circular axis superimposed wooden ceilings and its architectural structure and specifications. The article is also concentrated on ceiling features such as their technical and structural aspects, along with other similar mosques and masjids of Eskişehir are compared and evaluated.
