Kâinat, bilinen en eski çağlardan bu yana insanoğlu için bir sır olmuş, bugün bilimsel gelişmeler sayesinde bizler için apaçık olan gerçekler, eski zamanlarda evrenin akıl sır ermeyen olguları olarak görülmüştür. Günlük hayattaki en basit bir olay bile evrenin sırlarıyla ilişkili olarak yorumlanmıştır. Varoluşun ilk sebebi ve nasıllığı üzerine çeşitli nazariyeler ortaya atılmış, özellikle mitolojik anlatılarda varlığını gösteren bu problem destan, masal ve halk hikâyelerinde motifler halinde günümüze ulaşmıştır.
