Gennady Nikolayevich Pospelov, a famous Russian literary theorist of the twentieth century, claims that there are three laws in the development of the literature of societies: "The law of universal communities", "The law of national peculiarities" and "The law of intellectual-artistic differences". Among these, Pospelov, which puts the "law of universal common aspects" as the fundamental law in the historical development of literature, in a sense reorganizes another triple formulation of the 19th-century French literary historian Hippolyte Taine, consisting of "race-time-environment" in a hierarchical dimension, thus preparing a more scientific and clear theoretical framework for the study of the evolution of the literary phenomenon. In this review, we will discuss the triple formulation that Pospelov has presented in the literary history specification along with the practice and will question the validity of the same formulation in the field of art history in general.
