Tarih, hayal mahsülü olamaz, bundan mütevellit yarih yazarken olayları gerçeğe en uygun haliyle vermek önemlidir. Tarihî bir olayı, kendi dönemi şartları içerisinde değerlendirmek ve o döneme şahitlik etmiş kaynakları dikkate alarak yazmak, gerçek bir tarihçinin en değerli vasfıdır. Tıpkı, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’ün dediği üzere: “Tarih yazmak, tarih yapmak kadar mühimdir. Yazan, yapana sâdık kalmazsa değişmeyen hâkikat insanlığı şaşırtacak bir mâhiyet alır.” Bu vesileyle, Türk tarihini yazan tarihçileri tanımak ve ortaya koydukları çalışmalar hakkında bilgi sahibi olmak, bir çalışmanın ilk safhasıdır. Bu doğrultuda, bu çalışmada, Türk Deniz Tarihçisi Saffet Bey’in hayatı ve eserlerini kaleme alacağız. Saffet Bey 1870 yılında doğup, 1913 yılında henüz 43 yaşında iken dâr-ı bekâya irtihal etmiştir. Vefatı çok genç bir yaşta vuku bulmasına rağmen, yapmış olduğu çalışmalar ve üretkenliği takdire şayandır. Kısacık hayatına büyük başarılar, devlet nişanları, birkaç kitap ve otuzu aşkın makale sığdırmıştır. Bu denli üretken bir tarihçi olmasına karşın, hakkında yazılanlar birkaç satırı geçmemiştir. Bu çalışma ile Saffet Bey’in, önemli bir deniz tarihçisi olduğunu ve kıymete hâiz çalışmalar yaptığına işaret etmek arzusundayız.
History can not be a dream, so it is important to write events in the most appropriate way while writing history. To evaluate a historical event within its own terms and to write it by taking into account the sources that bear witness are the most valuable qualities of a true historian. Just as Mustafa Kemal Atatuk said: “To write history is as important as to make history. It is an unchanging truth that if the writer does not remain true to the maker, then it takes on a quality that will confuse humanity.” In this way, it is the firts phase of a study to know the historians who wrote the Turkish history and to have knowledge about their works. Accordingly, in this study, we will write out the life and works of Turkish Naval Historian Saffet Bey. Saffet Bey was born in 1870 and died in 1913 when he was 43 years old. Despite the fact that his death occured at a very young age, it is admirable that the works which he has done and his productivity. He has achieved great success in his his fleeting life, had state insignias, wrote several boks and over thirty articles. Although he is such a productive historian, the writings about him do not pass a few lines. With the study, we want to point out that Saffet Bey is an important naval historian and he has done significant studies.
