Ad bilimi; evrensel adıyla “onomastik”, bir kelime türü olan “ad”ı çeşitli yöntemlerle ele alıp inceleyen bir bilim dalıdır. Türkçeye “yer adı bilimi” olarak yerleşmiş olan “toponimi” ise, onomastiğin bir alt dalı olup amacı belirli yöntemlerle yerlerin özel adlarını incelemektir.Yer adı çalışmaları dillerin zenginliğini göstermek bakımından da önemli bir malzemedir. Bugün standart Türkçede kullanılmayan ya da sadece ağızlarda var olan bazı sözcükler yer adlarında yaşamaktadır. Yerleşim birimi adlarının değişim halinde olması, yer yer unutulmaya yüz tutan bu adların geç kalmadan tespit edilmesini ve bu alana önem verilmesini gerekli kılmaktadır. Ayrıca yer adlarının milli kültür açısından da önemi büyüktür. Yer adlarının toplumların hafızalarından önemli izler taşıdığı da bilinen bir gerçektir. Çalışmamızda Giresun İli merkezine bağlı yer adları incelenmiştir. Giresun ili merkezindeki sokak, mahalle, cadde ve merkeze bağlı beldeler ile köylerin adları leksik-semantik açıdan ele alınmış olup bu yer adlarının yapı ve kökenleri de tasnif edilmiştir.
Universally known as onomastics, science of place names is a discipline that studies a word type “noun/name” by various methods. Meaning “Science of place names” in Turkish, “toponymy”, a subdivision of onomastics, aims at studying proper names of places by certain methods. Toponymy studies are significant in terms of showing the wealth of the languages. Some words that are not used in Turkish today or exist in only some dialects can be found in names of the places. The fact that the names of the settlement units are changing necessitates that these names which are forgotten locally must be identified and taken into consideration in this area before it is too late. Besides, place names have a great significance in terms of national culture. It is a well-known fact that place names have great traces from the memories of the societies. In our study, the names of the places withing Giresun province have been examined. The names of the streets, neighbourhood, counties and villages have been taken into consideration from a lexical-semantic point of view and the structure and origins of these names have been classified.
