Dünyanın çeşitli düşünce ummanlarında durmadan kürek sallayan Cemil MERİÇ her fikir limanına uğramış, kapısını çalmadık irfan bekçisi bırakmamıştır. Kendine bir fikir işçisi diyen MERİÇ, şiirden romana, psikolojiden tarihe neredeyse bulduğu her şeyi okumuş. Okuduklarından edindiği bilgi kendi akıl süzgecinden geçirip, kendi zihninde yeniden işleyerek adeta ham maddeyi mamul madde haline getiren bir makine gibi ardında her biri bir abide sayılabilecek ondan fazla eser bırakmıştır. Yakın Tarihimize ayrı bir ilgi duyan Cemil MERİÇ, Osmanlı devletinin ve genç cumhuriyetin Tarihçilerini ve eserlerini eserlerinde sık sık konu edinmiş, bu tarihçiler ve eserleri hakkında çeşitli yorumlarda bulunmuştur. Osmanlı Devletinin son vakanüvislerinden Ahmet Cevdet Paşa da Cemil MERİÇ külliyatında hatırı sayılır derecede ele alınan tarihçilerinden biridir. Osmanlı Devletinin son dönemlerinde keskin zekâsı ve tükenmeyen çalışma azmiyle kendisini çok çabuk fark ettiren ve devlet bürokrasisi içinde baş döndürücü bir hızla yükselen tarihçi, müellif ve muhafazakâr-reformist devlet adamı, Cemil MERİÇ’in eserlerinde birçok yerde ele alınmış ve çoğunlukla övgüye mazhar olmasına karşın bazen de tenkitlere maruz kalmıştır.
In the world’s various minds, Cemil MERİÇ, who has been constantly swallowing, has gone to the port of every idea, and has not stolen his door, and has not left the guardian. Meric, who calls himself an idea worker, has read almost everything he has found from poetry to novel, from psychology to history. The knowledge he received from his reading passed through his own intellectual clever and re-worked in his own mind, as a machine that made the raw material a raw material, each of them left more than a dozen works that could be counted as an abid. This conservative reformist and historian Ahmet Cevdet Pasha who was the leadman of Ottoman Empire’s reforms, took on very important missions in modern times. Owing to this missions he made Ottoman bureaucracy realize him in a very short time and rose so fastly in state grades.
