Günümüzde en klasik anlamı ile üniversite; bilimsel özerkliğe ve kamu tüzel kişiliğine sahip, yüksek düzeyde eğitim, öğretim, bilimsel araştırma ve yayın yapan fakülte, enstitü ve yüksekokul gibi aynı rektörlüğe bağlı birimlerden oluşan eğitim-öğretim kurumu olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Ancak klasik anlamının dışında üniversiteler; kuruldukları şehrin sosyal ve ekonomik gelişimine de katkıları bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada Siirt Üniversitesi’nin Siirt şehrine yapmış olduğu sosyal ve ekonomik katkıların neler olduğunu örnekler vererek araştırılmaktadır. Siirt Üniversitesi’nin tarihsel gelişimi ve günümüzdeki durumu hakkındaki bilgiler sayesinde Siirt şehrine nasıl ve hangi alanda üniversitenin katkı sağladığı ortaya koyulmaktadır. Bunlarla beraber Üniversite öğrencilerine yapılan anket ile birlikte elde edilen ölçekler yoluyla toplanan verilerin analizi sonucunda elde edilen bulgular ile 2018 yılında eğitim gören 13.410 üniversite öğrencisinin yaklaşık olarak ortalama aylık 600 TL harcadığı ve 9 aylık bir eğitim öğretim süreci içinde Siirt şehrine 72.414.000 TL ekonomik katkı sağladığı bunun dışında sosyal olarak da Siirt şehrinin gelişimini sağladığı tespit edilmiştir.
Nowadays the university with its most classical meaning; It is defined as an educational institution which has scientific autonomy and public legal personality and consists of the units affiliated to the same rectorate as higher education, education, scientific research and broadcasting faculties, institutes and colleges. However, universities other than the classical meaning; they also contribute to the social and economic development of the city in which they are founded. In this study, the social and economic contributions of Siirt University to Siirt city are investigated. Thanks to the historical development of Siirt University and its current status, it is revealed how the university contributed to Siirt city and in which fields it contributed. In addition, with the findings obtained from the analysis of the data collected by the questionnaires obtained with the surveys conducted with the university students, 13.410 university students who were educated in 2018 spent 600 TL in average in a monthly education period and in 9 months education period, a total of 72.414.000 TL economic In addition, it has been determined that the city of Siirt has provided social development.
