Kalem işi bezemeleri Türk Sanatında oldukça geniş bir uygulama alanına sahiptir. Özellikle Osmanlı Devleti’nin son dönemlerinde hem dini hem de sivil mimaride kalem işi bezemeler yoğun olarak görülmektedir. Boyalı nakışlar olarak da bilinen kalem işi bezemeler doğrudan sıva üzerine veya ahşap malzeme üzerine uygulanmaktadır. Ahşap malzemede genellikle kapı ve pencere kanatlarında, minberde, vaaz kürsüsünde, üst örtüde karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Sıva üzerine uygulanışında ise yapının kubbesinde, kubbeye geçiş öğelerinde, mihrapta ve yapının beden duvarlarında ele alınmaktadır. Ele alınan kalem işi bezemeler konu bakımından ise oldukça zengindir. Mimari mekan tasvirleri (konut, cami vb.), doğa tasvirleri, natürmortlar, sembolik tasvirler, yazı süslemeleri gibi konular söz konusudur. Anadolu’da bazı yapılarda bereket sembolü olarak değerlendirilen tasvirler de bulunmaktadır. Sözü edilen bu tasvirler genellikle camilerde karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Zamana karşı direnen Damatlı Köyü Eski Cami’nin son cemaat yerinde ve harim beden duvarlarında sıva üzerine uygulanan kalem işi bezemelerde haşhaş bitkisi, dilimlenmiş karpuz motifi, üzüm, incir gibi tasvirler mevcuttur. Yapı Salihli ilçesine 17 km. uzaklıkta olan Bozdağlar’ın eteğinde, Damatlı Köyü’ndedir. Oldukça harap durumda olan yapının çatlamış olan ahşap tavanından sızan yağmur suları nedeniyle kalem işi bezemelerinde bozulmalar meydana gelmiştir. Bu çalışma ile bugün yok olma tehlikesi ile karşı karşıya olan caminin bezemelerinin ayrıntılı olarak ele alınarak farklı bölgelerdeki benzer uygulamalarla karşılaştırılarak belgelenmeye çalışılmıştır.
