Abstract:

A person needs to read in order to know himself/herself, his/her culture, his/her society and world. In the learning of mother tongue, in the development of language skills and transferring these both skills in to social life lies reading and ability to understand what is read. The most effective factor which makes reading important is comprehension. Complex cognitive process and the use of strategies requires reader’s preliminary information and experience, as well as author’s knowledge also an effective process that associates the comprehension. Reading and comprehension seem to be two different concepts but , they are actually connected to each other by cause-effect relationship. Reading is for understanding , in other words, understanding is not the result of reading, actually it is the basis. The person’s self- development , having high level skills, benefit from rich resources and interpreting them depend on having ability to understand what he/she reads. According to recent researches on subject , in order to make sense of reading , it is necessary to consider not only the eyes but also the attention and recalling mechanisms, the use and nature of the language, understanding of speaking, interpersonal relations and socio- cultural differences. The ability of comprehension , which is gained in the period of primary school education affects learner’s all the ways through positive or negative way. While this effect is positively reflected in the lessons of the learners who have the ability to understand the reading, it is reflected negatively in the lessons of learners’ whose ability to understand reading hasn’t developed. This research was conducted to determine the importance of reading and comprehension skills in the teaching process, for this purpose the document analysis method was used in the study which was designed in accordance with qualitative approach.
