Abstract:

The Garip Movement in Turkish poetry, also called First New, was initiated by three young poets, Orhan Veli, Melih Cevdet and Oktay Rifat, with the publication of a book of poems titled Garip in 1941. Garip means “bizarre” or “odd,” or “strange”, and the word was used literally both for the movement and the book because these poems were unusual and uncommon for that period. Orhan Veli explained the particularities of the movement in the foreword of the book. Rhyme and measure were avoided in the poems written within this framework. The poets were against metaphors, figurative expressions, all kinds of artificiality, and fancy or ornate use of language. They tried to apply everyday language to poetry, and accordingly, they used certain words and expressions not previously employed in poetry. Ordinary people and their lives was a major theme. They were against poeticality in particular and also everything that was of yore. In this study, the titles of the poems in the book will be examined as gateways to the universe of meaning projected in each poem to see the extent to which they reflect the poem and the particularities of the movement. After that, the English and French translations of the titles will be compared with the original titles, and the results will be evaluated by Jean Claude Coquet’s Theory of Instances of Enunciation from the point of view of the semiotics of translation; the translator will be treated as the receiver of the discourse in the context of the original text and the producer of discourse in the context of the target text.
