Kültürün, tarih içinde anlam haritası gittikçe genişlemiştir. Bu süreç içinde etkileşime girdiği insanı da değiştirmiştir. Onun, doğayı kültürel formlar aracılığıyla tanımasını sağlamıştır. Dil, din, ahlak, teknik, sanat, ekonomi, siyaset, eğlence anlayışı, mitos, bilim ve felsefe kültürün görünür olduğu formlardır. Bu formlar toplumsal yaşam içinde şekillenmiş ve toplumu da değiştirmiştir. Değişen toplumlar uygar olarak nitelenmiştir. Hatta uygar ve kültürlü aynı anlama gelmiştir. Fakat zamanla uygar toplumlarda bir kırılma yaşanmış. Kültür ile uygarlık kavramları anlam bakımından ayrılmıştır. Bu kırılma “kültürel şizofreni” olarak adlandırılacak sonuçlar doğurmuştur. Kültürel şizofreni ortamında edebiyat, yaşananları yansıtma aracı olmuştur. Kültür ve edebiyat ilişkileri kültürbilim adı altında incelenmiştir. İncelemelerde toplumdaki kültürel unsurlar ve edebî eserlerin bunları yansıtmaları üzerinde durulmuştur. Türk edebiyatı, tarihsel süreç içinde pek çok kültürle karşılaşmıştır. Kültürel değişimler ve kırılmalar edebiyatı etkilemiştir. Selim İleri kültürel değişmelerin yaşandığı kritik dönemlere tanık olan bir sanatçıdır. İleri, romanlarında çoğunlukla aydınlar aracılığıyla toplumun ve kültürün durumunu tartışmıştır. Siyasal düşünceleri, ekonomik tartışmaları, eğitim sorunlarını, bozulan ahlaki ve dini değerleri, kültürel yozlaşmaları toplumsal ve kültürel yapı içinde ele almıştır. Geçmişe ait kültür ögelerini romanlarına malzeme yapmıştır. Böylece topluma ve kültüre yabancılaşan bireyin, parçalanmış düşünce dünyasını yeniden kurmasına yardımcı olmuştur. O, romanlarıyla yalnızca bir yazar olarak değil, bir kültür adamı olarak da karşımıza çıkmıştır. Edebî ve kültürel yaşantıya önemli katkılar sağlamıştır.
The map of meaning of culture has increasingly expanded in history. It has also changed the person in which he interacted. He made it possible to recognize nature through cultural forms. Language, religion, morality, technology, art, economy, politics, entertainment, myth, science and philosophy are the forms in which culture is visible. These forms have formed in social life and have changed society as well. Changing communities are defined as civilized. Civilization and culture have the same meaning. But with time there was a breakthrough in civilized societies. The concepts of culture and civilization are divided in terms of meaning. This breakthrough has resulted in the results called "cultural schizophrenia". In the cultural schizophrenia environment, literature has become a means of reflection of what is happening. The cultural and literary relationships are studied under the name of cultural science. The reviews of the cultural elements and literary works in society have been focused on the reflection of them. Turkish literature has encountered many cultures in its historical process. Cultural changes and breakdowns have influenced literature. Selim is an artist who witnesses critical periods of cultural changes. In his novels he discussed the status of society and culture mostly through the lights. His political thoughts, economic discussions, educational problems, distorted moral and religious values, cultural corruption, and social and cultural structures have been addressed. He has made his past cultural subjects into his novels. Thus, the individual who is alienated to society and culture has to rebuild the broken world of thought. He appeared to us with his novels not only as a writer, but also as a cultural man. He has made a significant contribution to literary and cultural life.

He deal with political thoughts, economics discussion, problems of education, deterioration in moral and religious values and cultural degeneration in the social and cultural structure.
