Abstract:

In this article, being dealt with narratives concerning dogs in hadith resources. Because there are so many narratives in classic hadith books. One of these narratives informs that angels do not enter to the house having a dog. This hadith will be subject to the review consisting of a several phases. In this context, in order to review and analyze al-matn (the text) and al-isnad (chain of transmission), it is necessary that narratives concerning dogs must be handled as a whole. Hereby, concerning narratives are determined by checking out all hadithes regarding the issue. Looking into hadithes with regard to the issue as a whole, it can be understood that the Prophet Mohammad had ordered that all dogs without exception to be killed for a while after that allowed to have some species. Hound, shepherd and agriculture guard dogs had been allowed to have by referring to their species. In some narratives it is informed that having dogs except the before-mentioned species reduces degree of good-deed. In deed, there are hadithes that a can being licked by dogs must be washed seven times and money being earned by selling the can is forbidden. These kind of narratives are reason of conflict among Islamic sects which ground on different criteria on using hadithes as evidence. With these kind of negative narratives concerning dogs there are some narratives that a sinner had been forgiven who quenched a dog taking its tongue out because of its thirstiness. Narratives regarding the issue are comprehensive and sometimes contradictory. But it is obvious that concerning narratives will provide a basis for reviewing and criticising of text of the hadith “Angels do not enter to the house having a dog”.
