Abstract:

This research was carried out in order to determine the level of computer literacy and use of basic music programs of music teacher candidates who took “Computer I and II” classes. The research is based on case identification qualitative study in terms of its goal and data collection method. During data collection process, firstly, related literature was reviewed and necessary notes were taken and then the survey prepared for collecting data was conducted on a total of 145 third and fourth grade students, who had taken computer classes in Music Teaching departments of Gazi University, Konya Necmettin Erbakan University, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University and Pamukkale University. Data obtained from surveys were analyzed by using SPSS 15.0 package program; they were presented in tables and interpreted. In the light of the obtained data, it was determined that almost all of the participants in the research had personal computers and they used computers primarily for internet, preparing homework, presentation, writing musical notes and recording music; almost none of them had computer education related with their departments before university, so they had obtained information about computer through informal ways; generally they had learnt music programs about their departments before university education, in informal ways, through their personal efforts, but this wasn’t sufficient in terms of occupation; there was a significant increase in music program use levels of teacher candidates who had taken computer class during university from an instructor from the Ministry of National Education staff; most of the music teacher candidates wanted to use computer in professional life, and this is one of the factors that increase the quality of music classes.
