Abstract:

Written in Karahanlı Turkish by Kâşgarlı Mahmud, the founder of the Turkology, Divanü Lugati’t Türk is one of the main guideline works on Turkish language in many directions. The translation of Divanü Lugati’t Türk, which is one of the works of Karahanlı Turkish period, was published by Besim Atalay in 1939. This work has an illuminating significance not only for Karahan Turkish period but also for preceding and following periods as Kâşgarlı Mahmud enriched his work, which is primarily a dictionary, with some grammatical elements besides vocabulary. Dictionaries are assumed as one of the pre-eminent works reflecting the vocabulary capacity of languages. But, it is not always easy to understand the meaning and function of some culture-related words in Divanü Lugati’t Türk. As a result, in this article it is discussed that corrections of some words and sentences or structures which were reading by mistake or missing and related to reading and meaning in Divanü Lugati’t Türk.
