18.yy’dan itibaren Batı’ya karşı güç kaybeden Osmanlı Devleti, gücünü yeniden tesis etmek ve Batı’da meydana gelen milliyetçilik hareketlerinden etkilenmemek için Osmanlıcılık kimliğini bir zorunluluk olarak inşa etmeye çalışmıştır. Tamda bu noktada Osmanlı, Batı’ya karşı gerçekleştirdiği refleks ile nasıl bir Osmanlıcılık kimliği tahayyülünde bulunduğu, tahayyülde bulunduğu bu kimliğin ne tür kimlikleri beraberinde getirdiği ve tahayyül edilen bu kimlik çerçevesinde nasıl bir kuramsal tartışmanın yapılacağı önem arz etmektedir. Bu öneme binaen çalışmada Osmanlıcılık kimliğinin nasıl inşa edilmeye çalışıldığı, inşa edilmeye çalışılan kimliğin mahalli ve dini kimliklerin tahayyülüne nasıl neden olduğu ve bu kimliğin milli kimlik teorilerinden modernist ile etno-sembolcü yaklaşımları açısından nasıl okunabileceği inceleyecektir.
