Abstract:

In vocational music training, traditional piano training constitutes a repertoire, works-exercises, methods and piano works obtained from a variety of sources or piano albums where these works are combined. These sources have been observed consisting mostly of works composed of classical western music harmony. It is assumed that the majority of the content of the curriculum, consisting of melodies/authors that students have never heard before, may have a negative impact on the piano teaching process, and it is believed that this situation may be a matter that should be addressed in the piano training. This study is an imaginary study prepared to determine the opinions of the musician candidates about the use of popular music in the piano training. For study, the data were collected from 25 teacher candidates at the I-II-III-IV level of the bachelor's degree studied at Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University. The semi-configured interview form prepared by the researchers for the music teacher candidates was applied and the data was analyzed. As a result, the majority of candidates found that the use of popular music in the piano training would not be a disadvantage, instead, they thought they could have a positive impact on the aspects of technical-musical development, motivation/volunteering, the expansion of the music distribution and the increase of their reputation as a music trainer.
