Haçlı Seferlerinin birçok nedeni mevcut olmakla birlikte bunların en önemlilerinden biri Peçenekler, Selçuklular ve Çaka Beyliği (1081-1093) tarafından sürekli sıkıştırılan Bizans Devleti’nin Batı’dan yardım istemiş olmasıydı. Bizanslılar, Batı’dan yardım isterken Haçlıları paralı asker olarak kullanabilecekleri, Selçuklulara karşı kaybetmiş oldukları toprakları onlar sayesinde geri alabilecekleri, daha sonra da Haçlıların ülkelerine geri dönecekleri düşüncesini taşımaktaydılar. Fakat süreç bu şekilde işlemedi. Haçlılar Anadolu’ya yalnızca Bizanslılara yardım etmek için değil, yeni topraklar fethederek yerleşmek için gelmişlerdi. Nitekim I. Haçlı Seferi sonrasında kurulan Haçlı devletleri Haçlıların bu niyetlerinin en bariz göstergesiydi. Öte yandan Haçlılarla ilgili sorun bu kadarla da sınırlı değildi. Onlar geçtikleri yerleri adeta ateş ve kül yığınına çevirmiş, Balkanlarda büyük huzursuzlukların yaşanmasına sebebiyet vermişlerdi. Buna bağlı olarak Bizanslılar, Haçlılarla hareket etme fikrini yeniden gözden geçirmiş, II. ve III. Haçlı Seferleri sırasında onlara yardım etmekten imtina etmişlerdi. Hatta elimizde bulunan tarihî veriler, Bizanslıların, Haçlı kalabalıklarına sundukları rehberlik hizmeti ile onları sarp güzergâhlara sevk ettiğini ve bir anlamda Anadolu’daki Türkmenlerin önüne attıklarını göstermektedir. Bunun ya da buna dönük algının Haçlıların Bizans’a ilişkin fikirlerini doğal olarak olumsuz manada yeniden biçimlendirdiği söylenebilir. Bu metinde söz konusu algı dönüşümü ele alınmaya çalışılacaktır.
Although many of the reasons for the Crusaders were present, one of the most important was that the Byzantine State, which was constantly suppressed by the Pechenians, Selchukles and the Chaka Beast (1081-1093) asked for help from the West. The Byzantines had the idea that they could use the Crusaders as paid soldiers when they were asking for help from the West, that they could regain the land they lost against the Selchucks, and that the Crusaders would then return to their countries. But the process did not work this way. The crosses came to Anadolu not only to help the Byzantines, but to settle by conquering new lands. Indeed, the Crown States established after the First Crusade were the clearest indicator of these intentions of the Crowners. The problem with the cross was not so limited. They turned the places they passed into a crowd of fire and ashes, causing great discomfort in the Balkans. As a result, the Byzantines reexamined the idea of moving with the Crosses, II. and III. They had refused to help them during their crucifixions. Even the historical data we have shows that the Byzantines, with the guidance service they offer to the Crown crowds, sent them to the routes and in a sense put them in front of the Turkmen in Anadolu. This or that perception can be said that the Crusaders naturally re-formed their ideas about the Byzantine in a negative sense. In this text, the perception will be discussed.
