Abstract:

In the history of art, it appears that history and social dimension have influenced the artists. After the Ottoman Empire, the establishment of the Republic of Turkey and within the society, thanks to the revolutions and the innovations brought, a change has occurred. The economic development of the country has also supported social development and especially the Turkish woman has begun to exist more freely in social life. Some of the artists who studied in Europe and returned to their hometown took part in their work to illustrate the Anadolu culture and referred to the cultural and traditional origins of the nation. Some painters have painted women who are living in a Western lifestyle in places outside the house where they are more social and active. This article, entitled “Imaging Contemporary Turkish Woman in Turkish Painting Art in the First Half of the 20th Century”, explores the historical, social and economic changes that society has undergone after the Transition of the Ottoman Empire to the Republic on how women are portrayed in pictures. The most important works of the painters are the examples of how the woman reflects the art of Turkish painting.
