Abstract:

Makāme is a genre of the Islamic literature in which an imaginary hero’s short stories are told. The most significant feature of those stories is the authors style. The author decorates his work with many arts mostly by secî, tenmîk and cinâs and chooses phonetically different and less used words to create a flowery style. In this style words are preffered over meanings and that is also important to show the author’s language dominance. In Arabic world Hemedânî and Harîrî opened a new era in this style. But also in some makāmes even thought the style protected its place some topics such as teaching, to advise, encouragement to the good manners became the purpose of the genre. This article focus on the makāme written in Arabic by Mehmed Emîn Efendi who was the attorney general in Elazığ at the end of the 19th century. The text is important according to its context rather than its style. Mehmed Kemâledddîn Harputî one of the foremost müderris and the müfti of Elazığ translated this makāme and serialized it with its original in Cerîde-i Sûfiyye journal. In this article the uppermentioned makāme -being the last of its kind in Ottoman Era- is presented to the attention of the scholars by taking up its topic, content and sources and also Kemâleddin Efendi’s way of translation is determined, the original text is enriched with footnes, vowelized and presented with its translation.
