Abstract:

Exoticism is a concept that has been preserving its importance in the fields of philosophy, psychology, sociology and literature for centuries. In this study, the concept of alienation is re-explained by explaining the relationship with the concepts of mass, culture, depression that are in close relationship with each other, and the relationship of the concept of alienation with the respective concepts is evaluated by assessing the conditions of the emergence of alienation. The individual, along with his new city life, has found himself in a much more complex structure. The individual has entered into this new and foreign situation in an effort to create a difference in himself. Under this individual’s attempt to differentiate, the individual’s attempts to seek himself are undoubtedly, because the individual is now alien to himself and to society. Exoticism is defined in contemporary psychology and sociology as a sense of alienation that a person feels against himself, society, nature and other people in which he lives. In this study, Baumgartner's Romans Bombay, Journey to Ithaca and The Zigzag Way, which focus on colonialism and foreignization, are criticized by post-colonial speech and close reading methods, and the foreignization subject is studied by cultural, individual and psychological dimensions. In the selected novels, the identity conflict caused by migration, the Eastern-West opposition, the problems of foreignization and authoritization were found at the forefront.
