Abstract:

In the studies on the relationship between economic growth and foreign trade, the fundamental dynamics of growth with a liberal perspective in general is emphasized by the external transparency. In this literature, the Classical and Neo-Classical perspectives emphasize the benefits of international division and specialization in the framework of comparative advantages and the increase in the prosperity resulting from it, while the Keynesian and extension perspectives indicate that exports will contribute to national income as a source of external demand. However, the argument that each export pen affects growth has become controversial, especially due to the issue of foreign trade limits. Therefore, it has begun to argue that not every export pen, but the ability to export goods based on high technology increases the high and sustainable growth capacity. In this context, it is emphasized that the condition that foreign trade can contribute positively to growth is related to the ability to produce and sell high-tech goods to the outside. In this study, the research was carried out on the capacity to produce high-tech goods in emerging economies with heterogeneous structure to be able to move to a high-income economy position without falling into the middle-income trap and the elements that influence this capacity. According to panel data analysis covering the period between 1996-2016 on the 18 emerging economies with the appropriate data set, the determiners of high-tech goods exports have been identified as external transparency and the ability to produce patents.
