Türk kültür ve eğitim hayatında etkili bir kişilik olarak önplana çıkan Hasan Âli Yücel, öğretmenlik yaptığı yıllarda ve sonrasında edebiyatla yakından ilişkili olmuştur. Bu manada, Yücel’in yazdığı şiir kitapları, klasik eserlerin Türkçeye çevrilmesinde gösterdiği etkin rol ve edebiyat ile ilgili yazdığı kitaplar bu ilişkiyi gösterir niteliktedir. Yücel, edebiyatla ilgili yazdığı kitaplarda hem edebiyat tarihi hem de Türk edebiyatı tarihini besleyici eserler kaleme almıştır. Edebiyat biliminin bir alt dalı olan edebiyat tarihi, bir milletin edebiyatını edebî eserlerinden yola çıkarak inceleyen disiplindir. Türk edebiyatında, edebiyat tarihi çalışmalarını ilmî ve bilimsel bir zemin üzerine kuran Fuad Köprülü’nün benimsediği sosyolojik metot, edebiyat tarihi araştırmacıları tarafından kabul görmüştür. Hasan Âli Yücel’in edebiyat tarihi ile ilgili görüşleri de Fuad Köprülü’nün düşünceleri çerçevesinde şekillenmiştir. Edebiyat tarihini medeniyet tarihinin bir parçası olarak gören Köprülü gibi Hasan Âli Yücel de edebiyatı toplum hayatının bir parçası olarak görmüş, Türk edebiyatını Türk kültürü ve tarihiyle bir arada düşünmüştür. Türk edebiyatı ile ilgili değerlendirmelerini ve tespitlerini de bu düşünceler çerçevesinde yapmıştır. Bu çalışmada, ilk olarak Yücel’in Türk edebiyat tarihine, Türk edebiyatının tasnifine yönelik görüşleri ve edebiyat tarihçilerine yüklediği görevler ele alınmıştır. Sonrasında, Yücel’in edebiyat tarihçiliğiyle ilgili görüşlerinin “Türk Edebiyatı Nümuneleri”, “Türk Edebiyatına Toplu Bir Bakış” ve “Edebiyat Tarihimizden” adlı eserlerindeki uygulanışı ve bu eserlerde uyguladığı metotlar incelenmeye çalışılmıştır.

Hasan Âli Yücel, who stands out as an effective character in Turkish culture and education life, was closely related to literature while he was a teacher and afterwards. In this sense, his poetry books, the active role that he played in translating classical works to Turkish and his books about literature shows this relationship. Among his literature related books there are feeder works to both literature history and Turkish literature history. Literature history is a sub-branch of literature science and it is a discipline which studies a nation’s literature considering its literary works. In Turkish literature, sociological method of Fuad Köprülü, who builds upon his literature history works on a scientific ground, was accepted by literature history researchers. Hasan Âli Yücel’s views about literature history are also shaped around the views of Fuad Köprülü. Like Köprülü, who sees literature history as a part of history of civilization, Hasan Âli Yücel sees literature as a part of society and considered Turkish literature together with both Turkish culture and history. He made his assessments and findings about Turkish literature within the framework of these considerations. In this study, firstly Yücel’s views about Turkish literature history and classification of Turkish literature then his imposed tasks to literature historians are discussed. After that, application of his views about literature historiography and the methods that he applied on his works called “Türk Edebiyatı Nümuneleri”, “Türk Edebiyatına Toplu Bir Bakış” and “Edebiyat Tarihimizden” have been tried to examine.
