In this study, freshmen teacher candidates in Erzincan College of Education are looked for their ability to distinguish text types and their differences among gender and high school type graduated. A scale constructed to measure this ability on the basis of language usage, the inventory for the ability of distinction texts by type. During the construction proc- ess, a pilot study with forty freshmen students is carried out to review and reconstruc the draft scale and to address the reliability and validity issues. Final scale is applied to 464 fisrt- year elementary teacher education students to collect data. A t-test and Variance Analysis are employed to seek the differences in abilities of gender and secondary programs groups. Moreover, a descriptive data analysis is also conducted and declared as frequencies and per- centages. Results showed that there is no diffrence between high school graduates, but fe- males distinguished texts types significantly better than males.
