Abstract:

People hardly keep up with developments that occurs very frequently. This improvement is shaped up in relation to conceptions and habits. In this field study Atatürk Universty students perception of spare time is sought. It is aimed to determine the effects of their socio-economical status and cultural backgrounds, to find out whether they are influenced by the variables such as economical status gender and educational level, to discover whether they make use of their spare time properly, to figure out the differences among several majors. This study also seorced for the effects of family and social structure, economical status demographical factors on the perception of spare time.   The data are collected a self-prepared questionaire. The instrument is tested by conducting a pilot study. The questionaire is handed out to 1000 students from different majors. Most of them was male and the rest of the sample is female. The response is 95% , and the quastionaire inculudes 22 items.   As a result of this study it is found that the students have a great deal of spare time but they cannot spend their spare times properly. There seems to be a lencer relationship between their economical status and the amount of spare time the results showed that their inclination of recreational activity depends heavily on their economical status. As the economical status increases, the view spare time and sports presents the statusquo becomes more common. The students differ in the of spare time by their malors. Nonetheless all students agree with the belief that spare time and sports are tools for physical and mental development. Seperation of spare time into physical activites is very unusual. Although male on female students have almost equal amount of spare time, there is a difference in using the time effectively.   Consequently, the study points out that few factors affect the perception and habit of spare time. Turkey is a fast-growing and developing country. This development causes people to have more spare time. This increase is directly realeted to not only the growth of the country, but also people’s financial and educational level. To use the spare time appropriately, the concept of recreation should be appreherded.
