Milliyetçilik, bugünün sosyal ve siyasal yapısını etkileyen önemli olgulardan biridir. Milliyetçilik, çoğu zaman, bir ideoloji, söylem, dil ve harekete geçirici siyasi eylem olarak ele alınmaktadır. Milliyetçilik, nihayetinde, bir doktrindir. Bu nedenle, milliyetçiliğin oluşumunu açıklamak için farklı kuramlar, ele alışlar geliştirilmiştir. Bu ele alışların altında yatan unsur, milliyetçiliğin siyasal, toplumsal ve kültürel hayatta yarattığı etkileme düzeylerinin nasıl ve ne şekilde gerçekleştiğine yöneliktir. Milliyetçiliğe ilişkin geliştirilen kuramsal yaklaşımlardan modern milliyetçi kuram, onun modern bir olgu olduğuna işaret eder. Modernite ile birlikte yaşanan toplumsal, siyasal ve ekonomik dönüşümler, pratikte ve söylemde ulus düşüncesiyle bütünleşik olarak milliyetçiliğin gelişim aşamalarından ilkini oluşturduğunu ifade eder.Etno-sembolcü yaklaşım ise, milliyetçiliğin salt modernleşme süreci ile başlangıcını kabul etmenin hatalı olabileceği yargısından yola çıkarak, onun modern öncesi dönemde etnik unsurlar bağlamında açıklanması gerektiği ve yine mitlerin, köken anlayışlarının semboller ve simgeler aracılığıyla kitleler üzerindeki hâkimiyetini esas alarak yaklaşılması gerektiğini varsayar. Bu anlamda, bu makale, milliyetçilik ile ilgili geliştirilen iki kuramın ayrıntılı bir değerlendirmesini sunarak, onun hangi bağlamlarda ele alınması gerektiğine ilişkin varsayımlarda bulunmaktadır.
Nationalism is one of the important facts that affects the social and political structure of today. Nationalism is often treated as an ideology, speech, language and political action that moves. Nationalism is, in the end, a doctrine. Therefore, different theories, approaches have been developed to explain the formation of nationalism. The element under these approaches is about how and how the levels of influence that nationalism creates in political, social and cultural life occur. From the theoretical approaches developed to nationalism, the modern nationalist theory indicates that it is a modern fact. The social, political, and economic transformations that are accompanied with modernity indicate that nationalism, integrated with national thought in practice and speech, is the first of the developmental stages of nationalism.The ethno-symbolic approach assumes that it should be explained in the context of ethnic elements in the pre-modern period, and that it should be approached on the basis of the dominance of the myths and their concepts of origin over the masses through symbols and symbols. In this sense, this article provides a detailed assessment of the two theories developed concerning nationalism, with assumptions on which contexts it should be addressed.
