Osmanlı sivil modern okullarının ilk örneği olan Rüştiye mekteplerine öğretmen yetiştirmek amacıyla 1848 tarihinde Darülmuallimin açılmıştır. 1868’de ise sıbyan mekteplerine öğretmen yetiştirmek için Darülmualliminin Sıbyan şubesi, 1876’da ise lise seviyesinde öğretmen yetiştirmek için İdadi şubesi açılmış fakat bu şube uzun ömürlü olmamıştır. 1880 senesinde kapatılmış olan İdadi şubesi 1891 tarihli irade ile Âlî ismiyle tekrardan açılmıştır. Âlî şubesi 1924 yılında Yüksek Muallim Mektebi ve otuzlu yıllarda İstanbul Yüksek Öğretmen Okulu adını almıştır. Yüksek Öğretmen Okulu Cumhuriyet Dönemi başından 1978 yılına kadar lise öğretmeni yetiştirmek üzere Türkiye eğitim tarihinde önemli bir rol almıştır.
The Darülmuallimin was opened in 1848 in order to train teachers in the Rüştiye letters, the first example of the Ottoman civil modern schools. In 1868 the Sibian branch of Darülmuallimine was opened to educate teachers in the Sibian texts, and in 1876 the Idadi branch was opened to educate teachers at the high school level, but this branch was not long-lived. The Idadi branch, which was closed in 1880, was reopened with the will of 1891 with the name Ali. His branch was named High Muallim Mektebi in 1924 and Istanbul Higher Teacher School in thirty years. The Higher Teacher School has played an important role in the history of education in Turkey to train high school teachers from the beginning of the Republic Period until 1978.
