Abstract:

In this research, it was aimed to evaluate the 4th grade primary school human rights, citizenship and democracy textbook in terms of readability and age level. The research data was obtained through the document review with qualitative research methods. The document examined is the 4th grade 'Human Rights, Citizenship and Democracy' textbook, which is recommended to be taught in schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in the 2017-2018 academic year. For the purpose of the study, 100 words of information texts were randomly selected from the subject contents of each unit and their readability was calculated according to the Flesch-Kincaid Formula, Gunning Fog Index and the formula of Ateşman for Turkish. As a result of the research, the information texts of the fourth grade primary school human rights, citizenship and democracy textbook are very difficult when examined according to the Flesch-Kincaid formula, and readability age is 25 or more; according to the Gunning Fog Index formula, it is difficult to read in terms of readability level; according to the Fireman formula, in terms of the readability level, the first text is very difficult, the second and the fourth texts are moderately difficult, and the third, fifth and sixth texts are difficult. All of the texts of the course book are found difficult when the average of the Felsch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog Index and Fireworks formulas is taken. According to the obtained data, it can be said that the information texts in the fourth grade primary school human rights, citizenship and democracy textbook do not conform to the level of the students. In the light of these results, it is recommended that the reading texts in the textbooks be developed in accordance with the age and level of the students.
